Good morning, 1st May, the national Labor Day!
In 2026, Thailand introduced important changes in labor law in order to improve employee protection and to modernize the workplace. Hence, these reforms are significant for locals as well as for foreign companies doing business in Thailand.
Accordingly, there is one major change, which concerns social security contributions. Indeed, since January 2026, the wage ceiling used to calculate contributions increased from THB 15,000 to THB 17,500. As a result, both employers and employees may now pay up to THB 875 per month. In the future, this reform will help to increase employee benefits.
Besides, there is also an improvement concerning family rights at work in Thailand. Indeed, maternity leave increased from 98 days to 120 days, with 60 days paid by the employer. In addition, paternity leave became an official right in the private sector. In fact, fathers can now take up to 15 paid days after the birth of a child.
Furthermore, another important topic to tackle is severance pay. Employees with more than 20 years of service can receive up to 400 days of salary if dismissed. Thus, this shows stronger protection for long-term workers.
Finally, Thai authorities are more focused on conformity, especially concerning temporary workers, contracts, payroll systems, and fair treatment. In consequences, companies must update their HR policies to respect the new rules.
All in all, Thailand’s 2026 new labor law reforms allow for strengthening the rights of workers and creating new obligations for employers to ensure better management as well as better conditions of work. Then, these changes make the Thai labor market more modern and attractive.
